Moist is able fo self-reflect to some degree; he's already being forced to atone for other actions, so he does seem aware that he has caused harm even as he tries to recontextualize it as part of a game. He doesn't do it for the money, he does it for a certain kind of thrill. I think about the reflection of that in our world a lot. There are plenty of people in places of power who have smooth talked their way into roles of importance with little to no regard for who they harm. (Cont.)

Power, money, influence, attention, the thrill of the game, whatever their goal is, the more people buy into their own scam, the easier it is for them to abstract other people and lessen the direct impact they have while also bolstering their own importance. It's not the scammer's fault for getting someone to buy the fake ring; it's the mark's fault for falling for it. (Cont.)
