Once upon a time I might have had respect for software development as a profession. There may still be small pockets of professionalism hidden away but for the most part it's a deeply and dangerously unserious field.

    @arclight@oldbytes.space As a software engineer that considers themselves respectable I find your asessment to be true. It is, however, often not even the devs. They just follow orders from upstairs. I have literally fought against our Product Manager back then to please let us improve existing code... all the devs were on my side, even my lead at the time agreed... but the PM didn't agree and didn't get the benefit... Many have simply given up in the face of adversity and of course we have no trade unions for programmers anywhere because most of the older programmers were too comfortable to create them...
