Question for academics on Mastodon - is it easier (relatively) to recruit good students for PhDs, etc, as the job market is now so tough for graduates? In which subjects are you seeing this ? Boosts and anecdotes welcome! #AcademicChatter

@graham_knapp@hachyderm.io The current immigration regime in the USA makes it almost impossible to get good quality non-US students. The set of quality domestic students seeking a PhD is also decreasing rapidly.

@graham_knapp@hachyderm.io a view from Earth Sciences and Sydney: Domestic students have always been hard to recruit, jobs are abundant here (think well paid jobs in iron ore, critical minerals). International: very hard (almost imposssible, due to visa constraints) for regional universities, but the top universities such as UNSW attract really strong applicants (largely from India, SE Asia)

@graham_knapp@hachyderm.io increasingly hard in Australia - we get a lot of applicants (particularly international) but the vast, vast majority are just fishing and sending applications to every academic listed on the website. At least half the emails I receive spell my name wrong or are addressed to the wrong person. Meanwhile, stipends are horrifically low and so I don't blame local applicants for looking for a real job instead.
