But, given these receivers have a gain that's more in the horizontal than vertical plane, if I'm using one of those oblong dishes with a longer vertical diameter, would i be better off putting my dual receivers at 90° to take better advantage of that? Of would I get more benefit from the wider beam availability in flight?

@davep@infosec.exchange @Extelec@mstdn.social @a2es@mstdn.social I don't know. I've never really looked at the beam shape of a cut off dish. My gut says in the line of the wide part of the dish, but I think you may have to experiment, you might find it makes no real difference.
