If the people you're "protecting" finding out about what you're doing is embarrassing or upsetting you -- YOU KNEW WHAT YOU DID WAS WRONG WHEN YOU DID IT If your motive was actually to help people you'd announce it on high and tell everyone who would listen about your great ideas. How do these people sleep at night. Maybe they don't.

@bipolaron@scholar.social although UK has a lot of CCTV cameras (mostly in private hands, in spite of the paranoia the right wing press have about public sector agencies using them), when there's a new scheme in a public area it gets published in the local press, with exact costs. Universities also publish details of their schemes and how they are used. Although real time AI and face/object detection is now a standard feature on even lower end Hikvision (and other) DVRs, and omnidirectional field of view is easy to achieve with modern cameras in groups - but If 500 cameras is costing them $3 million they are being ripped off (and that in itself is more of a scandal than the cameras simply being there) https://www.essex.ac.uk/-/media/documents/directories/estates-and-campus-services/cctv-code-of-practice-policy.pdf
