@bipolaron@scholar.social although UK has a lot of CCTV cameras (mostly in private hands, in spite of the paranoia the right wing press have about public sector agencies using them), when there's a new scheme in a public area it gets published in the local press, with exact costs.
Universities also publish details of their schemes and how they are used.
Although real time AI and face/object detection is now a standard feature on even lower end Hikvision (and other) DVRs, and omnidirectional field of view is easy to achieve with modern cameras in groups - but If 500 cameras is costing them $3 million they are being ripped off (and that in itself is more of a scandal than the cameras simply being there)
