Especially around sciences- what gets funded, what doesn’t, what directions knowledge goes in are choices. And they all have political consequences. Some incredibly harmful things are deemed “a priority” to know about (building weapons of destruction, ways to further relentless growth on a finite planet ex: developing technologies for fracking) while other really important and useful things are seen by some as frivolous or even dangerous.
