Friday was a holiday to celebrate Matariki - Māori new year, which is tied to the first appearance for the year of the Pleiades star cluster. RNZ marked the occasion by broadcasting the waiata 100 countdown (following a public vote for New Zealand's favourite songs): https://www.rnz.co.nz/life/music/2026-waiata-100-countdown I heard most of the show, almost all of the songs are familiar to me, I love many of them, have seen many performed live, but I have a personal top 7. For anyone who might be interested, I have posted a thread about them here https://bsky.app/profile/nzbarry.bsky.social/post/3mqiffq2p7s22 By way of a bonus, the song placed by the RNZ listeners at #1 is not one I listen to on the regular - its the Patea Maori Club with Poi E. A "rapturous blend of traditional Māori waiata and '80s lo-fi electro funk", this song burst onto the scene in 1984. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tq2K8ak47nM
