@eta@gotosocial.i.eta.st I find them really confusing. Some gantries on the M25 only have 50% of VMS' working - how should I parse a 50 displayed on only 2 lanes? And recently I was driving back and the limit kept jumping up and down between gantries. I was stationary and watched it flick down from 60 -> 50 -> 40 in 30s at one point, before going back up. Doesn't seem like anyone has considered the human factors element, especially when they do camera enforcement on these.

@hugh@social.crablab.uk the most utterly idiotic one I've seen recently is a 40 VSL, displayed about 500 metres in front of a "Variable speed limit ENDS :tsrgd_671:"… they're completely heinous when it comes to roadworks on the M4 though; often they will leave a limit in place for days even when there are no works, or start to signal lane diverts and reduced speeds a good few kilometres before the actual cones/works themselves (leading to getting aggressively undertaken by idiots), or indeed the already-mentioned issue of just not bothering to cancel of course whenever anyone calls them out on this they do their usual routine of just gaslighting the public into saying that the system always sets things correctly and is perfectly safe, so stop complaining, which doesn't build trust at all and causes people to dangerously disrespect the limits even further!
