I was a teen during the 1980s and I remember conservatives of the era turning "liberal" into an insulting slur. So, people moved on to using the term "progressive" in its place. I am sitting here 30-some years distant, marveling over how "liberal" has been turned into a slur once again but it's the left that has turned it into a slur because liberals are just a shade or two left of reactionary/conservative and have been fucking over marginalized groups for decades upon decades.
