One other problem that breaks my heart - when I read Buddhism as a college student, I realize I read into it what I wanted. I didn't understand how different the branches were, and focused on writings of the Buddha without really...looking into what the actual Buddhist religions around today believed?
I think I was also more comfortable with ambiguity.
But looking at it now - very, very few modern buddhist groups teach anything REMOTELY like continuity or continuation or ....anything resembling, in any way at all, your consciousness surviving, even reborn.
And I'm not...sure how I missed that. Like I spent YEARS reading ENORMOUS AMOUNTS OF BUDDHISM.
But I was young, and probably glossed over the bits on aging and death and focused on what interested me then.
