The way I was raised, family was synonymous with needing to hide major parts of yourself and basically putting on the same kind of falsely perfect "realtor beige" persona expected for a job interview. Someone later described me as "getting a 404 error" every time I heard them talk about their own genuinely loving and casual family, and I still find it a hard concept to understand non-adversarial biological relationships. I actually believed it was a biological imperative to hate your relatives in order to discourage incest, as well as a social requirement to feign love for them in front of others.
