@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz Is there any way to figure out if something I bought a while ago (a mermaid tail ring) is toxic?
It was cheap and I bought it mostly for its shape so I don't really care if it's not silver, as long as it's not toxic

@luana@wetdry.world it's difficult, proper tests require destruction of the object for chemical analysis, though you could heat it up to 400c ish and if it doesn't melt it's silver, and I was also thinking of maybe some oxidation test as cadmium oxide is a different color than silver oxide. it's better to be safe than sorry though, especially if it was like a couple bucks it is not unlikely that it was actually cadmium, as it has the same silvery appearance see also this thread: https://chaos.social/@_g_baer_/116992704459654456
