The situation must have escalated off screen because we saw a cop screaming into his car phone "OMG the whole town has been destroyed!" and in the next scene the army is setting up a road block and a Pretty 50s Girl (TM) is driving up to it.
We learn she is a reporter and, like the audience, wants to see whatever is going on in this movie but the army corporal running the roadblock won't let her through. She drives away and sneaks in.

Reporter lady climbs a hill and takes a picture of... something. We don't see what it is, but she is very Shocked and Appalled! Then an army guy materializes out of the ether and snatches her camera. She appeals to his manager, an army captain, who likes her because he read a book she wrote about Korea (probably the war). He explains that the town of Ludlow has vanished overnight and we don't have any bodies. #monsterdon #BeginningOfTheEnd #GrasshoppersVsPostcards
