He learns that he recruited Neil in the future. He learns that they have a great friendship and "get up to some stuff", and more than anything else in the movie this train of thought seems to upset him.
And he asks whose temporal pincers maneuver it is, and learns--though he clearly knows but doesn't want to acknowledge--that it's his. He ordered it. And with this knowledge, he's really on the edge.
Why wouldn't he have figured this out sooner? Why does it upset him?
