Update about Linux travails: Did a fresh install to F44, was fine, but after updating the kernel, same problem. I strongly believe the problem is with the current kernel for Fedora. Again, no log messages available, but being able to use the first kernel to boot is a strong indicator. Kernel version jumped from 6.19.10 to 7.1.4. Must be something in that kernel that's causing the failure. So I'll wait for the next kernel to see if the problem goes away. I have no log messages so that's the best I can do.

More: New kernel 7.1.5 dropped today - same problems. It's looking like I may have to give up on @fedora after all these years. I simply can't have a situation where the system can't start up, especially when there are no log messages to give me some indication of what's going wrong.
