Since there are a number of ant enthusiasts here i figured I'd ask: this ant Hill has been here for at least 20 years, and in all of that time I don't recall seeing something like this. A bunch of winged ants are milling about the entrance to the ant hill. I never see the winged ants from this hill, only the unwinged ones doing normal ant business. It seems like some kind of ant politics are afoot. Does anyone know what this is?

@eleanor@chaosfem.tw Those ants with wings are young queens. These look like Messor harvester ants. Do they often collect seeds? This is a special event for the colony. They are sending the young wing'd queens and males out to start new colonies. It's like ant graduation but also an ant wedding? It's a big deal!
