@courtney@pdx.social I think you are *correct* in the conclusion that hosting stuff on GitHub *is* putting it in a training set. But it also feels a bit… tone deaf? To suggest people can’t be upset by that. When I put my project in GitHub a decade ago, that was very much *not* the expectation that was being set. I’m sure you know that. The deal changed since then yes, and *not* moving is a choice, so you could say I’m at fault. But the powers that be also understand that friction, and are abusing it.

  • @courtney@pdx.social One can simultaneously be upset at GitHub for selling out to MS, and at MS for being an evil corporation, while also technically being at fault for not yanking the source off of there. Humans contain multitudes :)

    @philip@mastodon.mallegolhansen.com The thing I'm tweaking is the recent Hugging Face anger, which I think is misplaced. Of course they hoovered up GitHub. All the LLMs did. The difference with Hugging Face is they provided a little transparency and they are taking a ration of shit for it. Personally, I'd be more angry at those that aren't disclosing their training practices. This pile-on probably will guarantee they won't.
