In fact, I believe campus cameras should belong to a campus SOC, monitored and controlled by neither central IT or a campus police department. If footage exists, it should be governed by a seperate campus entity, one with oversight and not controlled by campus leadership. Too much surveillance, under the control of parties keen on utilizing (and abusing) it, is the problem. Remove conflicts of interest, create auditability, and enforce governance of that data. It’s time to rethink the role of a SOC, campus camera systems, and governance. Allow access to campus partners and create sustainable solutions to protect all in watched spaces.
