i think particularly my problem with generative ai, looking past the environmental issues, and even if you review or proofread or test or edit its output or whatever, is that it pushes us forward to a world where we are reduced to surrogates for generative ai to interact with the real world. i mean, take the example of vibecoding. if the skill of programming is transformed into a cycle of: finding an issue, pasting it into some llm, then pasting the output back. who knows, maybe the person who pointed out the issue found it with an llm. then what are we doing? acting as a messenger for two computers to talk to each other? at what point are we no longer using it? at what point is it using us? at what point are we no longer shaping our workflows to get around our flaws and challenges, but shaping our workflows to get around *its* flaws. at what point is it no longer a tool to help us work more efficiently, but a commander, telling us how to help it work more efficiently. i think in a world where every piece of software is "tainted" by generative ai in some way is a world where the talent of developers is reduced to "how fast can you pump things out" idk, its hard for me to articulate my thoughts on this matter. hearing ai now kind of puts me into a blind rage, and it sucks because i think there are genuinely interesting and good use cases for non-generative ai, but whenever i hear "firefox has ai powered features" or whatever, it just sounds like pandering to techbros, "look! we have the ai thing too!" point is i dont want to live in a world where generative ai snuck into everything one way or another, where when i see a drawing i dont think "cool! good work!" i think "did you pump this out with an image generator? did you ACTUALLY put effort into this?" i dont want to live in a world where when i see a cool program i have to think "was this made with ai?" i dont want to live in a world where when i interact with someone i have to wonder whether or not im talking to a real entity, where, when someone submits a pull request to my project, i have to question if the entity who submitted it values this project enough to put the time and effort in to contribute. but we are approaching that world where i feel like i have to question everything. and i Fucking Hate It. thanks for reading my long disorganized rant
