It's very fun seeing people getting excited about the potential new designs for the Euro banknotes. And change is good! But there's something you may not know about the current designs. You may be aware that the bits of architecture on the notes are meant to be imaginary, sort of generically European-looking. But there's a good story about the bridges. [1/4]

    In the originally proposed designs, the bridges looked too much like real bridges that were used by the designer, as reference. There's a really great episode of 99% Invisible about this ( https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/458-real-fake-bridges/ ), but the long and short of it is that the bridges we see now on the notes are even more made-up, in response to the critique that the original bridges looked too real.
