Yes, the car was convenient for a 4-5-7 sized family, visiting family and friends, or taking trips to the mountains (no trains; mostly there still aren't any).
I learned to ride bikes "late" (8yo) and didn't dismount till I came to Europe (granted, to a mountainous area) and bought my first car (but I bought a bike first) and started going everywhere. Biggest trip was 8Mm in two weeks.
