Our freezer got defrosted. The door was left open a crack, just enough to let in the air, but not quite enough to set off the open-door sensor alarm. It reminded me of a cool trick. My boss has a cabin where the electricity isn’t very reliable, but it's hard to know if there’s been a long outage. He keeps a coin on top of the ice cube tray. When he arrives at the cabin, if the coin is at the bottom of the ice cube tray, he knows to throw out anything else that was in there.

    @dillyd@turtleisland.social Modern units, in addition to their various terrible features and reduced build quality, have this type of alarm built in. Ours has a red 'power outage' indicator on the control panel which has to be manually acknowledged.
