I think it's kind of remarkable that the incentives in corporate/centralized social media are so consistent, that 15 years later we're still seeing the same hostage-taking behavior patterns that make me want to shatter my phone against the nearest concrete surface.
What do I use Instagram for? Talking to my goddaughter, and on occasion, one of my long-distance boyfriends (the massage therapist one).
Maintaining these lines of communication (particularly, being reachable via notifications) means paying a never-ending cost of dismissing the world's most "who the FUCK cares" notifications, multiple a day, every day.

I'm not going to present Mastodon as the final form panacea of doing things better, but it's such a step in the right direction compared to the platforms that have the incentive (read: prophetic guarantee) to eventually enshittify. Corporate-controlled social media can never grow out of childish, empty attention-seeking behavior. The main line they must care about pushing upwards is engagement, and there's no ceiling at which they're satisfied. They can only grow deeper into the nooks and crannies of a refined, production-tested extraction methodology. It is a cultural dead end.
