@hkz@social.chinwag.org This sandwiched PCB (or whatever it is) might be a hack (a demux for MAD9) to enable 3 MB instead of the 2.5 MB you would get when disabling one original 512 kB memory bank (sorry, the article seems to be available in German only):

This was a commercial product by USElectronic (Ulrich Skulimma) and was available for 18 German marks – soaround 9€ not accounting for inflation. I would expect other Atari aftermarket hardware manufacturers offered similar solutions.

@hkz@social.chinwag.org Some more details on the 3 MB extension can be found (p. 54 ff.) in https://info-coach.fr/atari/documents/general/Bitbook2.pdf I never heard about this when I used an ST as my main computer – but then I got a Sun 3/60 in 1992, so the ST was not that interesting any longer...
