The internet did not kill reading. It changed the way we read, rewarding fragments over depth, outrage over understanding and speed over thought. Meanwhile, misinformation is free and the truth increasingly sits behind a paywall.
What happens to a society that can no longer finish a long article or follow a complicated argument?

@Climatehistories@mastodon.social But there is also the question of people beleiving disinformation because it is repeated/amplified by social media. Disinforation is a serious danger to society (consider during Covid how people were urged to take medicine to deworm horses by people who had invested in the company producing it). Or the succesful claims climate change is a hoax in order to help oil industry grow and become more profitable at the expense of killing the planet.
