@laurenshof@indieweb.social Not radical, and you're not alone in that view. There's *something else* that defines communities here, and servers are just a coarse approximation.

    @benpate@mastodon.social @laurenshof@indieweb.social I'd like to disagree a bit with Laurens here. Although I see how for many people, the server they're on is a pretty random variable, the rules are defined on the server level. So it does matter, but many don't notice, because 95% of servers have practically the same set of rules. It may be a bit like playing for the one or the other soccer club, both associated to the national soccer federation. The rules on and of the yard are the same, wherever you play. You would only realize how important this is, when you move to a non-associated group of enthusiasts who just meet on a triangular field without actual goals every Wednesday evening. Maybe there is something we can learn from this analogy. Could actual federations (sorry for the confusing word in this respect) play a positive role defining and reinforcing basic rules of safety in the fediverse too?
