My cable/internet company knows about my thermostat, by brand name. I don't recall connecting it to our wifi. I specifically told the guy installing it that I didn't want that. The only stated purpose of it being connected to the wifi is for us to put apps on our phone to change the temperature away from the wall. We've never installed those apps, we don't want them. So what data is being sent that my ISP knows about my thermostat, and where is it being sent? They named several of our devices, which were accurate, though they missed six others. But somehow, among the four they saw, one was the thermostat, as if it were online at that very moment. Why?
