@Lee_Holmes@infosec.exchange that sounds like TLS does exactly what it's supposed to do, and ensures that the server replying to me is the server it says it is? And it's on me to verify that the server I'm visiting is the one I intended to? I can't say I've heard anyone utter the take that VPNs as a whole are useless, but that consumer VPNs are snake oil. Everywhere I've worked had a VPN for work devices, in the context of personal devices I can't see trusting the operators of the majority of sketchy consumer VPNs any more than I trust potentially compromised hotel WiFi.
