Ha! Yep. Totally jinxed myself. There was a very distressed young couple in the hardware store parking lot with their tiny baby. They had locked their keys in their car. Since they obviously would have called a locksmith if that was something in their financial means I offered to help. Said help involved me doing physical things that I probably should not have been doing. That said we successfully got the keys out of their car and they were able to get their baby out of the hot sun.

Also! Fellow white people: remember to use your privilege for good. This couple was (and presumably still are) Black. I'm a middle-aged white man with metric tons of privilege and the folks at the hardware store know me very well. So I was able to borrow a tool from the shop without paying for it. (an ultra long grabby claw thing that we were able to squeeze in a crack to unlock the door)
