Even if the math is right, it’s far easier to win market share by differentiating than copying the leading brand; and DSA policies poll well in a vacuum—it’s Democrats they hate. It seems likely to me that the best way to get Republican voters is with candidates established Democrats fear and hate.

And there’s evidence for this theory. I recall Mamdani got Republican voters. Not a lot, but you don’t need a lot. Going back gulp 20 years Obama ran as an outsider—last time that’s happened in a general—and won Indiana. It’s the centrist Republicans centrist Dems keep chasing who rarely show up.
