@juliette@mastodon.green Can't say my parents had time for hobbies, but I was always helping my father when he was reparing some stuff, during house makeover or when he was making some things like furniture etc. I always felt invited to watch and help. I appreciate it much after all this years as I learned that when I need smth I can just look around and find it or create it myself from other things, I can do much repairs myself, I am full of ideas.

@juliette@mastodon.green every child is different, but in general if we talk too much about our hobbies there’s a risk of making the kids think they are chores

@juliette@mastodon.green @Pepijn@mastodon.online You can try, but kids often have their own ideas. 🙂 My mother was a musician and read books a lot, I grew up doing those things. I also grew up interested in computers, which my mother didn’t know anything about. I’ve tried to get my kids interested in all those things, with only partial success. One of my kids is very musical, the other much less so. Both read a lot, and both think computers are very boring except for playing video games. The one who’s not so into music is very into drawing and painting, which I know very little about. That’s all fine with me. 😊

@juliette@mastodon.green Mom tried to teach me to cook, but she had no patience for a newbie. (I couldn't estimate amounts on my palm, for instance, and wanted to know it was "a quarter teaspoon" if the recipe said "a dash.") Dad probably didn't think of yard/flower bed maintenance as a hobby, but he did insist that I help with it. 😁

@juliette@mastodon.green My mom liked Chinese calligraphy. So she sent me to a class, and she sat with me and did the class together. And we'd do 30min practice every evening... while I had 0 interest in it ... But I didn't hate it too much so we did it like that for 3 years then I stopped forever and she did it on and off. When she retired she finally got to take classes herself and she still does now.
