@Beatpoet13@mastodon.social He was specifically speaking about GDP, which he had just invented in 1932, but it's broadly applicable to everything. If you reduce a complex problem to a single digit or score, it is convenient in discussions but it masks the real complexity being discussed. Worse, stupid people who ONLY see the score or number and are, at best, ignorant or, at worst, deceitful will use it inappropriately.

    @evdelen@mstdn.ca myes, there is that subtle diffrence tween a bird's eye overview & simplification versus the dumbing down effect of generalisations & how ignorance leaves plenty energy to go into unquestionable conviction, to da detriment of all , yet what sounds complex to one might be selfevident to another, & often the straightforwardness of an evolutionary mind might be perceived as a threat to stagnant politics & linear mindsets while overall their status quo framework becomes a greater risk
