Taikenmon'in rebuilt the temple (the name Hōkongō-in dates to this time) as an enclave of nearby Ninna-ji. Like Ninna-ji, the position of abbot was held by a member of the imperial family. At the same time she employed a Ninna-ji monk, Rinken (林賢), to re-landscape the garden.

  • Opened in 1130, Taikenmon'in dedicated the temple to the recently deceased Emperor Shirakawa (白河天皇 1053-1129), her grandfather-in-law. Shirakawa had acted as Taikenmon'in's foster father, but more than this is said to have fathered some of her children. #Kyoto #京都 #ハス
