Opened in 1130, Taikenmon'in dedicated the temple to the recently deceased Emperor Shirakawa (白河天皇 1053-1129), her grandfather-in-law.
Shirakawa had acted as Taikenmon'in's foster father, but more than this is said to have fathered some of her children.

Taikenmon'in (待賢門院) spent her last years at the temple as a nun by the name of Shinnyohō (真如法). During her long stays at Hōkongō-in it is said she carried on an affair with the poet Saigyō (西行法師), who had a residence beneath Mt. Ogura in Sagano (小倉山). #西行法師
