Had a bit of time to kill, found myself at Ballarat library so tested out their public kiosk. At first it was "out of order" but that was because the monitor was turned off! Used my computer skills to fix that (the power button was behind the sticker, the library staff couldn't figure it out) and discovered I could select the boot menu, so technically, if I wanted to, I could boot from an external SSD and do whatever I like. Maybe there's a proxy required for internet access, but maybe not. Something to investigate next time I'm there. But even when I was logged in to the default windows environment (had to use my library card details, can't just show up without being a member and use the computer which is kinda lame), I could install Firefox plus extensions and the portable version of Sublime Text - everything I need to write an issue of The Sizzle and leave the laptop at home. all up, a lot more flexible than I assume
