my position in this whole thing was that i was born in the united states of america in the early 90s; my awareness of queerness was curtailed by the death tolls of the late 20th century, and then, at the dawn of the 21st, expanded by the internet

i grew up in a liberal community where queerness wasn't so much absent as deeply limited in scope. there was an emergent squeaky-clean gay male identity that was completely unrelatable to my boyhood self (it kind of required being the opposite of autistic). transsexuality was a medical curiosity that happened to other people. lesbianism was relatable to me, but that was a forbidden thought.
