i grew up in a liberal community where queerness wasn't so much absent as deeply limited in scope. there was an emergent squeaky-clean gay male identity that was completely unrelatable to my boyhood self (it kind of required being the opposite of autistic). transsexuality was a medical curiosity that happened to other people. lesbianism was relatable to me, but that was a forbidden thought.
