TLDW: You have never seen, with your own eyes, a "typical" star. Every star we see with the naked eye is either extraordinarily bright, or in one case extraordinarily close (and still not typical). The vast majority of the stars in the milky way galaxy - red dwarves - are too far and dim to see with the naked eye.
