What seems to help a lot is if you keep in mind the genre the story is in. Cus like, as weird as Undertale/Deltarune gets, it never really stops being being a coming of age/adventure story, barring perhaps some horror elements here and there. Considering your theory from the lens of "would this make a satisfying plot point in a coming of age adventure story?" really ups your batting average significantly.
