@cr1901@mastodon.social @oracle@phantomthieves.net the short of it is that it's not some sneaky new identifier, contrary to what most of the reporting claimed - it's been around *forever*. pretty sure it dates back as least as far as Windows 7, if not XP. the GDID being used for measuring impressions in Edge is a bad privacy design but like... who the hell uses Edge outside of boomers and corpo environments. if you don't use a Microsoft account to sign in across multiple devices then the GDID is a fairly benign OS install ID.
