Well, I'm going to be working with a set of materials scientists and experimental physicists who work on manufacturing quantum nanomaterials. They have a lab that exfoliates atom-thin flakes from bulk crystals, characterizes them using computer vision, stacks them up to make new materials, and characterizes some of their resulting properties. It's semi-automated right now, but we're going to work on automating it even more, making it available to more off-site users, and improving the reproducibility, which is a big problem in their field. I'm just the IT guy, my job is make the computing environment that runs the robots, trains and does inference with ML models, and handles data analysis chain versioned and reproducible, using stuff we've developed for @cloudlab@discuss.systems . I also get to work with a former collaborator again studying some of the human factors relating to the ways that people understand and collaborate around this kind of instrument. Should be a fun project! https://www.price.utah.edu/2026/07/22/university-of-utah-selected-for-elite-national-network-of-ai-driven-cloud-laboratories
