  I should clarify: learn troff Not because its output is superb (although it's pretty good), not because once you get past the syntax the weight of complexity you need to hold in your mind is refreshingly light (although it very much is), but because _the entire system_ is so simple you can keep it in your mind with room left over to compose and write and polish. You can learn how to use it *and how it works* with less effort than puzzling out the oddities of MS Word's most recent update.
