RE: https://mastodon.scot/@andrewducker/116965105596945242 Emily Bender on LLMs: “The message that I always bring when I have a chance is that, when the text that comes out of one of these systems makes sense, it’s because we are making sense of it.” The source of the stochastic parrots term wants us all to see “AI” more clearly… both for the crap and groundbreaking qualities and almost everyone is failing. But I find this particular passage enlightening as to why I’m so unimpressed with the #LLM as a gateway drug. I admire language used masterfully. (Sometimes to pathological levels… I still cringe when remembering using the wrong word 30 years ago in a presentation.) I think most people’s bar for communication is if they got something off their chest coherently enough that the onus of action is on you, not them. Precision is the intersection of the artful and the accurate. In language lots of people are barely even concerned about just one, so of course LLMs are amazing to them.
