When code failed, and I had to help peeps fix it, I used to say: "Before we fix the code let's try to understand the reasons why this code is like it is."
Sometimes the reason was the original programmer didn't know better. Many times, too many, the reason was crunch time, or deadlines. More often the reason was the overlaying data had changed, or was invalid.
Now... it is increasingly possible there is no reason... just vibes.
