@petrillic@hachyderm.io We could hypothetically demand anything, doesn't mean it will happen. AFAIK the only country that previously held nukes and no longer does is Ukraine and look how that worked out for them. The odds of any current nuclear state disarming for any reason are about the same as the odds of Peter Pan being elected prime minister/president/whatever and making it happen.

  • @azonenberg@ioc.exchange @petrillic@hachyderm.io worth noting that Ukraine did not have operational control of the nukes and given the post-Soviet trajectory it is not at all clear they would have had it by 2014 (I have no doubt that all of the necessary technology would have been possible to develop, but the general poverty, disarray, and unrest is not the kind of environment that makes it possible. not to mention a leader that was Moscow's puppet)
