@azonenberg@ioc.exchange @petrillic@hachyderm.io worth noting that Ukraine did not have operational control of the nukes and given the post-Soviet trajectory it is not at all clear they would have had it by 2014 (I have no doubt that all of the necessary technology would have been possible to develop, but the general poverty, disarray, and unrest is not the kind of environment that makes it possible. not to mention a leader that was Moscow's puppet)

@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems @petrillic@hachyderm.io Yeah I'm not saying they were a viable straegic power at the time. But it's certainly the kind of precedent that will make any other nuclear power considering unilateral disarmament have second thoughts.
