So at $dayjob I am now looking for Wi-Fi access points with off-the-shelf support for VLANs, WPA-Enterprise using RADIUS, and PoE. Local controller (or no controller at all! that's fine too), no cloud shit. I don't love Unifi, I don't love Mikrotik, but I'm familiar with their offerings. Maloney clause: If you are seeing this post without context, you may think I should look at OpenWrt or other aftermarket free firmwares. That's how I got in this mess in the first place.

@futzle@old.mermaid.town I too have used UniFi and Mikrotik and don’t love them. TP-Link Omada is next on my list to try.

@futzle@old.mermaid.town I quite like Aruba’s wifi offerings. Their IAP- line have built-in clustered controllers (ie one AP elects itself as the controller, but any other AP can become the controller if the first one goes offline) but you pay a premium over the AP- line which kinda sorta balances out the cost for a dedicated controller. You’ll have to deal with HP, though.

@futzle@old.mermaid.town IKYK I'd just use Miktrotik, and IKYK it will work. I'm curious why you wouldn't just use that (and perhaps you will now that this other experiment has gone awry, perhaps temporarily until someone works out the next jailbreak or whatever). I'm not actually asking why, you don't need to comment in more detail, but it seems like a project that could just be avoided.
