@jamesh@aus.social @decryption@aus.social I think the other factor, especially with the Geelong example, is that the town centres were built for motorists rather than train travellers. You'll notice they were built on the Princes Hwy, near where land was reserved for the Geelong Bypass. This was for the convenience of motorists, rather than train travellers.

It's often planned around the idea of the suburban park-and-ride commuter going to Melbourne - the idea that someone could travel *to* these stations for shopping or whatever doesn't seem to occur to them. Much better to surround the station with a big parking lot!
