Brown University economics professor Roberto Serrano allowed a take-home midterm after students expressed anxiety about in-person exams following a campus shooting. The class average was 96%, with 40 students scoring a perfect 100%. Suspecting widespread AI-assisted cheating, he made the final exam in-person. The average fell to 48.6%. Eighteen students dropped the course, nine skipped the final, and 22 of those students had scored 100% on the take-home midterm.
